Spille Beach
Spille Beach is our local beach and is just under 7 km away – easily reachable by walking or cycling for experienced walkers or fit cyclists. Or, of course, by car.
Unlike in the coastal areas further north, the local authorities have recognized that large hotel complexes are not particularly attractive and that they prefer to focus on sustainable tourism. New buildings are indeed being constructed from time to time, but they are no higher than three stories and, apart from the village center, are not built close together.
The small town, which from autumn to spring resembles a ghost town where only the workers engaged in new construction and repair work can be seen on the streets, only comes alive in early summer and is a popular destination for excursions or holidays, especially among Albanians and Italians.
Along the beach promenade, many, some very charming, restaurants are lined up, and the pine grove, which was planted in the 1960s by Albanian students on behalf of the state to drain the marshy subsoil, offers shade and coolness during the hot midday hours.
Another highlight is the spectacular sunsets!
and sometimes afterwards to the discotheque under the pine trees illuminated with strings of lights, where young and old come together in the summer to Albanian music in traditional circle dances.
Spille Beach – either in the pine grove or just south of the promenade – remains a popular spot for campervans if you don't need much comfort, as the ground is easily navigable up to a certain point. And with a bit of luck, early risers can get the freshest fish and seafood from the fishermen returning from their catch between 6 and 7 a.m.
Another attractive destination with a beautiful route along the coastline is the Bashtova fortress, located a little further south, where in ancient times, when the coast extended further inland, trade goods awaited shipment.
